Why elite athletes turn to oxygen
When Cristiano Ronaldo went for hyperbaric oxygen therapy after his knee injury in the Euro 2016 final, it was not a passing fashion. LeBron James has the same method in his recovery routine. Elite sport takes oxygen seriously, and it has a good reason to.
Recovery is largely about oxygen
Hard training and injury leave the same thing behind: micro-damage to tissue, inflammation and places that need repairing. To repair them the body needs oxygen, new tissue, new blood vessels and stem cells. The catch is that blood flow tends to be limited in exactly this damaged, swollen tissue, and not enough oxygen gets there.
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy gets around this barrier. Under raised pressure, oxygen dissolves directly in blood plasma and reaches even places that red blood cells struggle to supply. Better-supplied tissue heals faster and swelling subsides sooner.
Where oxygen makes the most sense
The athletes who gain most from HBOT are those returning from injury or after surgery. Strained muscles, overloaded tendons, the return after an operation. The rule is simple: the sooner after the injury you start, the better.
More recent reviews of the studies suggest that HBOT may speed up recovery after exercise-induced muscle damage. The rationale is strongest in poorly perfused tissues such as tendons and ligaments. The evidence is still early, however. The studies tend to be small and need confirming in larger samples.
When it comes to ordinary muscle soreness after training, or to the idea of “instantly higher performance”, the science is still more cautious. HBOT is not a shortcut to performance. Better performance comes through good recovery, and that is exactly where it is valuable for athletes.
Why pressure matters
Here is a detail that is critical. Clinical research into healing and tissue regeneration works at higher pressures, from roughly 2.0 ATA (atmospheres absolute) upwards. That is where the effects on blood flow and tissue repair show up most. Lower pressures have their place, but the support for these particular effects is thinner.
In other words, the outcome is not decided just by the fact that you are “going into oxygen”. What matters above all is the pressure and concentration the chamber reaches. Our clinic works at a clinical pressure of up to 2.4 ATA, the level that research itself assumes.
